What are extracellular vesicles (EVs/exosomes)?

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale particles built around a bilayer lipid membrane and naturally secreted by cells. The field recognizes three subpopulations distinguished by biogenesis: apoptotic bodies, microvesicles (also called ectosomes), and exosomes from the multivesicular body pathway. Size alone is not sufficient to call a product an exosome; biogenesis must be demonstrated through EV-associated protein markers such as CD9, CD63, CD81, TSG101, and Alix, alongside the absence of contaminants.
